Law Enforcement Torch Run
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness vehicle for Special Olympics in the world. In 2016, the international program raised more than $56 million dollars to support Special Olympics programs. More than 90,000 law enforcement officers from thousands of agencies have aligned themselves with this worthwhile cause. In Alberta, Law Enforcement Torch Run has been active since the late 1980s. In recent years it has been successful in raising more than $400,000 annually for Special Olympics.
Alberta Animal Services has been involved with the Law Enforcement Torch Run since 2011. Officers have participated in fundraising and awareness campaigns across Alberta to help continue the LETR mission of raising awareness and funds for the Special Olympics movement.
In 2018 Special Olympics is celebrating 50 years since the movement was initially founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1968.
